Pillars are an essential architectural feature in castles because they provide structural support to the heavy stone walls and ceilings. The weight of the stone materials used in castle construction requires pillars to distribute the load and prevent the building from collapsing. Additionally, pillars are also used to create large open spaces within the castle, such as grand halls and courtyards, allowing for more functional and impressive interior designs. Lastly, pillars can also serve a defensive purpose, providing additional support to the walls and making it more difficult for attackers to breach the castle. **
