In Japanese, "mas" is a suffix added to verbs to make them more polite. It is used in formal situations or when speaking to someone of higher status. Adding "mas" changes the verb from its plain form to its polite form. For example, the verb "taberu" (to eat) becomes "tabemasu" (to eat - polite form) when "mas" is added. **

Christmas is also called X-Mas because the "X" in X-Mas is actually the Greek letter "Chi," which is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ. In this context, the "X" is a symbol for Christ, so X-Mas is essentially a shorthand way of writing "Christmas." It is a common abbreviation used in written and spoken language to refer to the holiday. **
